Mental Health Counselling

People seek counselling with me when their mental health is not good.  Mental health relates to the psychological and emotional health of a person and when this is out of sync a person feels bad. If this goes on too long a person's mood can become low or you may or may not, feel depressed. 

It may be stress overload or Mental and emotional things may have started to happen and can take over like a feeling of general un ease, anxiety, over thinking and ruminating, pre-occupation, inability to concentrate or enjoy anything properly and even thinking irrational things. 

Your behaviours may have changed.  You might have started to become socially withdrawl or stopping doing what you use to do.  Some people have done this for years in an attempt to cope with anxiety.  Some people struggle to make any decisions and some unwanted behaviours can have started to you have reverted back to.


Physical symptoms caused by stress, anxiety or depression often happen too like sleep disruptions, waking early, an inability to fall asleep or waking through the night making energy levels very low adding to the already emotional exhaustion you feel.  Appitite issues and digestion problems are very common as are palpitations, panic attacks, tight throat and chest pains.  There are many other physical symptoms.

Sometimes friends or family have suggested counselling as they no longer know how to help. Often you have tried very hard already to sort things out and sometimes you need to work with a professional who may have had experience in working with these types of issues so that you can work out a way forward

STARTING COUNSELLING
When going in to counselling, it can be rather nerve-wracking but others who take the step find that counselling is very helpful and often wish they had done it sooner.  Its good to remember that experienced therapists have usually seen all what you are going through before and you will not confuse or shock your counsellor.  Talking things over with a professional helps to sort out what is going on with you and get you back on track, and probably on a better track than you were even before this happened too, so that's something to look forward to.

If the problem you have is a deeply ingrained part of your personality and self identity then often long term therapy is a better option.  Longer term Psychotherapy works to address the root causes of current re-occurring problems in thoughts, feelings, relationships and behaviours and involves deeper level exploration of self.
